BE FAITHFUL — DON'T REPEAT THE FAILURE IN THE WILDERNESS
Hebrews 3:7–19 | Hebrews Bible Study — Lesson #7
Knowing Jesus, Finishing Well
In our previous lesson, Hebrews 3:1–6, we learned that Moses was faithful as a servant in God's house, but Jesus Christ is faithful as the Son over His own house.
Today, Hebrews Chapter 3 continues with a warning that every Christian should take seriously.
It is possible to hear God's Word, witness His faithfulness, and still resist His direction through unbelief.
PART 1 — BE FAITHFUL (Hebrews 3:7–15)
"To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts..." — Hebrews 3:7–8 (KJV)
The writer of Hebrews quotes Psalm 95, recalling Israel's rebellion in the wilderness.
The people had witnessed God's miraculous deliverance from Egypt. They had seen His provision and protection. Yet they repeatedly questioned His faithfulness.
Their greatest problem was not what they lacked. It was their unwillingness to trust the God who had already demonstrated His power.
Hebrews 3:12 warns:
"Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God."
We must guard our hearts against unbelief and the deceitfulness of sin.
Verse 13 also reminds us to encourage one another daily. The Christian life was never intended to be lived in isolation.
Faithfulness requires listening to God's Word, trusting His promises, and continuing steadfastly in Christ.
PART 2 — FAILURE IN THE WILDERNESS (Hebrews 3:16–19)
"So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief." — Hebrews 3:19 (KJV)
What a sobering conclusion!
An entire generation experienced God's deliverance from Egypt, yet many never entered the Promised Land.
Why?
UNBELIEF.
They heard God's promises but refused to trust Him.
Their experience is a warning for us today.
We can attend church, read our Bibles, participate in Bible studies, and possess considerable knowledge of Scripture. But knowledge alone is not the same as obedient faith.
God desires more than our attention. He calls us to trust Him.
TODAY'S APPLICATION — FINISH WELL
Let us examine our hearts.
Are we listening to God's voice through His Word?
Are we encouraging others to remain faithful?
Are we trusting His promises, even when circumstances become difficult?
The Christian life is not merely about beginning well. It is about continuing faithfully in Jesus Christ.
And when our faith is tested, we can depend upon the One who never fails.
Jesus Christ is faithful.
As John the Baptist declared:
"He must increase, but I must decrease." — John 3:30 (KJV)
May that be our attitude as we seek to know Jesus better and finish well.
