Binding the Strong Man — Understanding Jesus’ Authority and the Power of the Kingdom

As I was walking my dog this morning the thought came to my mind about a "Strong Man" breaking into my house based on something Jesus said.  I asked ChatGPT to write an explanation of what the passage means as follows:

Matthew 12:28–30 is a compact masterclass from Jesus on spiritual authority, allegiance, and deliverance. Here’s a clear, in-depth walkthrough you can teach from or post as a standalone devotional.

What Jesus Meant by “the Strong Man” (Matt. 12:28–30)

The immediate context (vv. 22–27)

Jesus has just delivered a demonized man. The Pharisees claim He did it “by Beelzebub.” Jesus replies with three arguments:

  1. A kingdom divided can’t stand.

  2. Jewish exorcists among them do similar acts—so why single Him out?

  3. If He casts out demons by the Spirit of God, that proves God’s Kingdom has arrived.

This sets up the “strong man” illustration.

Verse 28 — The arrival of the Kingdom

“But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.”

  • Deliverance is evidence that God’s royal power (His active reign) has broken into the present.

  • Jesus’ authority over demons isn’t party magic—it’s the Spirit of God demonstrating that the Messiah/King is present and ruling (cf. Luke 11:20; Isa. 61:1).

Verse 29 — The strong man and the stronger One

“How can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.”

  • Strong man = Satan. His “house” is the domain where he exerts illegitimate rule (cf. Eph. 2:2). His “goods” are people held in bondage.

  • Bind = overpower, restrict, disarm. Jesus’ exorcisms show that He has already bound the strong man in principle. You can’t carry off a captor’s prisoners unless you first subdue the captor.

  • Plunder = liberation. The “plunder” is not loot but rescued lives—men and women set free from demonic oppression and sin’s tyranny (cf. Isa. 49:24–25; Col. 2:15; Heb. 2:14–15).

  • Implication: Jesus is the Stronger One who invades the devil’s turf, restrains him, and empties his house.

Verse 30 — Allegiance is not optional

“He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.”

  • No neutrality. Because a real kingdom confrontation is underway, bystanders don’t exist. You’re either aligning with Jesus’ mission (gathering) or you’re, by default, opposing it (scattering).

  • Gather vs. scatter echoes shepherd imagery: Jesus gathers the flock; the enemy scatters (cf. John 10:10–16).

Theological synthesis

  1. Christ’s supremacy in the conflict.
Jesus isn’t negotiating; He invades. His preaching, healings, and exorcisms are kingdom acts that push back darkness.

  2. Already/Not Yet of the Kingdom.
The kingdom “has come upon you” (already), yet we still await its consummation at Christ’s return (not yet). Deliverance now is a foretaste of the final eviction of evil.

  3. The Cross as the decisive binding.
Jesus’ earthly ministry previews the Cross, where He decisively disarmed principalities and powers (Col. 2:15). The resurrection enthrones Him as Lord, securing authority believers exercise in His name (Matt. 28:18–20).

  4. Human hearts are the battleground.
The “house” Satan claims is not just territory; it’s people. Jesus plunders by saving, healing, and restoring image-bearers to God.

Practical application for believers

  • Stand in Christ’s authority.
Deliverance ministry flows from Jesus’ finished work and is empowered by the Holy Spirit (v. 28). We minister in His name, not in techniques (Luke 10:17–20; Acts 16:18).

  • Discern the real enemy.
People are not the strong man—Satan is. Don’t demonize humans; rescue them (Eph. 6:12).

  • No neutrality in discipleship.
Shape your life to gather with Jesus: evangelism, intercession, serving, discipling. If we are passive, we functionally “scatter.”

  • “Binding the strong man” in practice.
Biblically, this isn’t a formulaic phrase we chant; it’s a Spirit-led act of resisting and displacing the enemy through:

    • Repentance and lordship of Jesus (Eph. 4:27)

    • Truth-filled proclamation of the gospel (Rom. 1:16)

    • Prayer and fasting (Mark 9:29)

    • Commanding in Jesus’ name when confronting demonic oppression (Acts 16:18)

    • Persistent obedience and holiness (James 4:7)

Binding the Strong Man — Understanding Jesus’ Authority and the Power of the Kingdom

In Matthew 12:28–30, Jesus reveals a vital truth about spiritual warfare: the Kingdom of God overpowers Satan’s dominion. Discover what it means to “bind the strong man,” how Jesus plunders the enemy’s house, and why there’s no neutrality in following Him.

Binding the Strong Man — Matthew 12:28-30 Explained

Scripture (NKJV)

“But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.
Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man?
And then he will plunder his house.
He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.”
Matthew 12:28-30

1. The Context: Confronting Accusations

Jesus had just healed a man possessed by a demon. Instead of rejoicing, the Pharisees accused Him of using Satan’s power. Jesus responded that a divided kingdom cannot stand and then revealed a deep spiritual truth: when He casts out demons, it’s proof that God’s Kingdom has invaded Satan’s territory.

2. The Kingdom Has Come

“If I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.”

This statement is revolutionary.
Every miracle Jesus performed—healing, deliverance, raising the dead—was not just compassion in action but evidence that the reign of God was breaking into the world.

Jesus’ ministry wasn’t about arguing theology; it was a demonstration of divine authority. Every demon cast out was a declaration: “The Stronger One is here.”

3. The Strong Man and His House

“How can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man?”

The Strong Man = Satan

Satan is the “god of this world” (2 Cor. 4:4), exercising influence over those bound by sin and deception. His “house” represents his dominion, and his “goods” are the lives he holds captive.

The Stronger One = Jesus

Jesus came to invade Satan’s domain—not negotiate with it. Before setting captives free, He first binds the strong man, disarming his authority through divine power.

To Plunder = To Rescue

“Plunder” here doesn’t mean stealing material goods; it means rescuing people from the grip of darkness. Every time someone turns to Christ, the enemy’s house is robbed of another soul.

4. The Cross: The Ultimate Binding

Jesus’ miracles foreshadowed the greater victory at the Cross:

“Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”
Colossians 2:15

At Calvary, Jesus crushed the serpent’s head (Genesis 3:15). His death and resurrection permanently broke Satan’s claim of ownership. When we stand in Christ, we stand in that completed victory.

5. No Neutral Ground

“He who is not with Me is against Me…”

Jesus draws a clear line: there’s no middle ground. Spiritual neutrality is impossible.
If we’re not gathering with Christ—helping to bring others into the Kingdom—we’re, by default, scattering.
Faith in Christ demands allegiance and participation in His mission.

6. Practical Application for Believers

A. Recognize the Real Enemy

People aren’t the enemy—Satan is. (Ephesians 6:12)

B. Stand in Christ’s Authority

The same Spirit that empowered Jesus now empowers you (Luke 10:19; Acts 1:8).

C. Bind Through Obedience and Truth

We “bind” the enemy’s influence not with empty words but by living in truth, repentance, and Spirit-led authority.

D. Gather, Don’t Scatter

Live as a gatherer—disciple others, share the gospel, build unity in Christ’s body.

7. Theological Insight

This passage paints a picture of warfare and victory.
Satan is strong, but Jesus is stronger.
Evil rules by deception; Christ rules by truth.
The moment the Holy Spirit works through us, the Kingdom of God pushes back the darkness.

Declarations

  1. Jesus is the Stronger One—His Kingdom has come!

  2. Through His cross, I am free from the strong man’s grip.

  3. I choose to gather with Christ, not scatter.

  4. I walk in the authority of the Holy Spirit to set captives free.

  5. The enemy’s house will not stand—Jesus reigns forever!

Closing Prayer

“Lord Jesus, Stronger One, thank You for binding the strong man and setting me free. Fill me with Your Spirit so I may walk in Your authority and help others find freedom. I choose to stand with You and gather with You until Your Kingdom fully comes. In Your mighty name, Amen.”

Revelation 12 – The Woman, the Dragon, and the War in Heaven

Revelation 12 – The Woman, the Dragon, and the War in Heaven

🌟 Description:

Revelation Chapter 12 reveals the great spiritual conflict between God and Satan. A woman clothed with the sun gives birth to a male child—symbolizing Christ and His Church—while the great red dragon, Satan, attempts to destroy them. Michael and his angels fight against the dragon, casting him and his demons out of heaven. This powerful chapter unveils the victory of Christ over evil and the ongoing spiritual battle faced by believers today.

📘 Blog Summary:

In Revelation 12, John witnesses a heavenly vision of a woman clothed with the sun, representing Israel, and the great red dragon, symbolizing Satan. The dragon seeks to devour her child, but the child (Christ) is caught up to God and His throne. A war breaks out in heaven—Michael and his angels battle the dragon, who is cast out of heaven to the earth. This marks the moment Satan loses access to accuse believers before God. Enraged, the dragon persecutes the woman, but God provides a place of refuge for her in the wilderness.

This chapter portrays the cosmic battle between good and evil, emphasizing that although Satan rages, believers overcome him “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” (Revelation 12:11)

Expository Writing on Derek Prince’s YouTube Video: "How To Apply The Blood Of Jesus?"

In his powerful teaching titled "How to Apply the Blood of Jesus?", Derek Prince explores one of the most profound aspects of the Christian faith—the significance of the blood of Jesus and how believers can apply its power in their lives. Prince emphasizes that the blood of Jesus is not just a historical event but a spiritual tool that Christians can actively apply for victory in their everyday lives. This message is both a reminder of the victory Christ achieved on the cross and an invitation to engage in spiritual warfare through understanding the authority and power found in His sacrifice.

The Blood of Jesus: The Foundation of Christian Victory

Derek Prince begins his teaching by laying the foundation of why the blood of Jesus is so essential. According to Scripture, the blood of Jesus is the ultimate payment for sin. Hebrews 9:22 affirms that "without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness." This declaration points to the historical significance of Jesus' death on the cross, where His blood was shed to atone for the sins of humanity.

Prince explains that Jesus' blood is a symbol of spiritual redemption, cleansing believers from all sin and offering them access to God's grace. Through the blood, believers are not only forgiven but also protected from the powers of darkness. Prince stresses that it is through the blood of Jesus that Christians have the right to claim victory over spiritual attacks and strongholds.

Applying the Blood of Jesus: A Practical Approach

One of the key points of the teaching is how to apply the blood of Jesus in practical ways. Prince outlines several methods that Christians can use to experience the life-changing power of the blood:

  1. Confession of the Blood:

    • The first step in applying the blood is through confession. By speaking out the power of Jesus’ blood over situations, circumstances, and spiritual battles, Christians are declaring their faith in Christ's victory. This confession activates the power of the blood in their lives.

  2. The Blood in Spiritual Warfare:

    • In spiritual warfare, the blood of Jesus serves as a weapon against the enemy. Prince explains how believers can speak the blood over their lives, homes, families, and situations to break any curses, witchcraft, or demonic attacks. The blood serves as a divine barrier that no force of evil can overcome.

  3. Protection and Deliverance:

    • The blood of Jesus offers protection for believers, as seen in the Old Testament when the Israelites applied the blood of the lamb to their doorposts, ensuring that the death angel would pass over them (Exodus 12:13). Similarly, Christians can claim protection through the blood against danger, sickness, or harm.

  4. Redemption from Sin:

    • Prince also reminds believers that the blood of Jesus not only delivers from spiritual oppression but also frees them from the consequences of sin. By applying the blood in repentance and faith, Christians access God’s grace and receive forgiveness, no matter how grave their sins may be.

  5. Claiming the Blood Over Sickness and Disease:

    • Derek Prince also teaches that the blood of Jesus brings healing. Isaiah 53:5 declares that "by His stripes we are healed," and through applying the blood, Christians can claim healing for their bodies, minds, and spirits. Prince encourages believers to speak healing over their lives using the power of the blood.

  6. The Power of the Blood in Prayer:

    • Prince underscores the significance of applying the blood of Jesus in prayer, especially in times of intense prayer and intercession. By invoking the blood in their prayers, believers are exercising their authority in Christ and engaging with God's power in a tangible way.

Living in the Power of the Blood

Derek Prince concludes his teaching by encouraging believers to live in the reality of the blood of Jesus every day. This involves regularly reminding themselves of the victory won on the cross and continuing to apply the blood in every area of their lives—whether it be personal struggles, financial challenges, or emotional turmoil. The blood is a constant reminder that Christians are redeemed, protected, and empowered by Christ’s sacrifice.

Final Thoughts

Derek Prince’s teaching on how to apply the blood of Jesus is a call to action for believers to fully embrace the power of Christ’s atonement. It’s not enough to merely know that Jesus' blood was shed; Christians are called to actively apply its power to defeat the forces of darkness, walk in victory, and experience God's protection and blessings in their lives.

Release from the Curse: Breaking the Chains of Spiritual Oppression - Part 1 | Derek Prince

Release from the Curse: Breaking the Chains of Spiritual Oppression - Part 1 | Derek Prince

The battle between blessing and curse is a spiritual reality that affects every believer. In his powerful teaching, "Release From the Curse - Part 1," Derek Prince unveils the often-overlooked but critical topic of breaking curses and how they can affect our lives. This teaching brings to light the spiritual bondage that many Christians unknowingly live under and offers a clear, biblical path to freedom.

Understanding the Curse: What is It?

In this teaching, Derek Prince begins by explaining the biblical foundation of curses. A curse is not just some abstract spiritual concept—it is a spiritual force that has tangible effects on a person’s life. It manifests as ongoing negative patterns that hinder progress, bring about suffering, and rob people of their destiny. Whether it’s in the form of generational curses, habitual failures, or even physical afflictions, a curse is a spiritual force that needs to be broken for believers to experience the fullness of God’s blessing.

Prince makes a key distinction: while blessings are inherited by grace, curses can be inherited by disobedience. He draws from passages like Deuteronomy 28 to show how disobedience to God can bring curses upon a person, family, or even a nation. Curses often manifest in negative patterns—sickness, financial instability, broken relationships—and they continue to affect future generations until they are broken by the power of Jesus Christ.

Breaking Curses: The Authority of Christ

The first step in breaking a curse is understanding the authority believers have in Christ. Prince emphasizes that Jesus has already broken the power of the curse. Through His death and resurrection, Christ became the ultimate solution for spiritual oppression. Galatians 3:13-14 declares, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us…” Jesus took the full weight of every curse upon Himself so that we could be set free.

This is a powerful reality that every believer must internalize: Jesus’ victory on the cross is sufficient. The chains of sin and curse have been broken, but to walk in that freedom, believers must claim it and actively engage in the spiritual battle. Faith in Christ is the key to unlocking the power of this victory in our lives.

Identifying and Renouncing Curses

A crucial part of Derek Prince’s teaching is the need to identify and renounce curses that may be affecting our lives. Prince instructs believers to examine their lives for any patterns of sin or unresolved issues that may be linked to a curse. These may include areas such as:

  • Financial Struggles: Persistent poverty, job loss, or financial instability.

  • Health Issues: Chronic illness, recurring health problems, or untimely deaths.

  • Broken Relationships: Unresolved family conflict, failed marriages, or strained friendships.

By acknowledging these patterns, believers can begin to renounce the curse in the name of Jesus Christ and claim the freedom that He offers. Confession is a key part of this process. Prince teaches that renouncing the curse aloud—breaking any agreements made with the forces of darkness—is essential for claiming victory.

The Power of the Cross in Breaking Curses

Ultimately, Derek Prince stresses that the cross of Jesus is the ultimate weapon against curses. Jesus bore the curse on our behalf, and by His stripes, we are healed and delivered. The cross is not just a symbol of salvation; it is the place where every curse was broken.

Prince encourages believers to look to the cross for victory over every curse, every hindrance, and every oppressive force in their lives. The power of the blood of Jesus has the ability to break chains that have bound us for years—whether we are dealing with generational curses or personal sins.

Living in the Blessing

Breaking the curse is just the beginning. Once a curse is broken, believers are called to live in the blessing of God. This means actively pursuing God’s will, obeying His commands, and walking in faith and obedience. Prince reminds us that blessings are not just about material prosperity; they also encompass spiritual peace, health, and wholeness.

Through the power of God’s Word and the blood of Jesus, believers are not only set free from the curse but are empowered to walk in freedom, peace, and abundance in every area of life. As we align our lives with God’s Word, His blessing will flow, replacing the curse with divine favor and guidance.

Conclusion

Derek Prince’s teaching on breaking curses is a crucial message for every believer. Too many Christians live under spiritual oppression without realizing that the power to break free is available through Christ. By understanding the authority we have in Jesus, identifying areas where curses may have taken root, and renouncing them in Jesus’ name, believers can step into the fullness of God’s blessings.

As Derek Prince encourages us, do not settle for less than God’s best. Jesus has already paid the price for your freedom, and it’s time to walk in the blessing that He has for you.

Commentary on Derek Prince's YouTube Video: "Receive the Holy Spirit"

In the first part of his series on Exercising Spiritual Gifts, Derek Prince delivers a foundational message on the essential role of the Holy Spirit in the life of every believer. This sermon, recorded in 1986 at YWAM in Hawaii, provides a comprehensive understanding of how to receive the Holy Spirit, what it means to be filled with the Spirit, and the vital connection between the Holy Spirit and the believer’s spiritual gifts.

Prince begins by emphasizing a crucial truth: “You cannot be saved without meeting Jesus.” This statement echoes the foundational Christian doctrine that salvation begins with a personal encounter with Christ. Salvation is not just about intellectual assent but a life-changing meeting with Jesus. Prince clarifies that this personal connection with Jesus leads to an essential transformation, setting the stage for receiving the Holy Spirit.

As the sermon progresses, Prince delves into the vastness of God's provision for believers, emphasizing that there is so much more to receive from God beyond salvation. Salvation is the beginning, not the end. There is a wealth of spiritual power and gifts that God desires to impart to His followers, and receiving the Holy Spirit is the key to unlocking this power.

One of the most powerful moments in the sermon is when Prince discusses how the Holy Spirit empowers believers with supernatural abilities. The Holy Spirit is not just a passive presence but a dynamic, active force that equips Christians to live out their faith in supernatural ways, including the manifestation of spiritual gifts such as prophecy, healing, and speaking in tongues. Prince teaches that the Holy Spirit brings spiritual power—a power that goes far beyond human capabilities.

Prince also addresses a critical point: the proof that you are filled with the Holy Spirit. According to Prince, one of the most evident signs of being filled with the Holy Spirit is the outflowing of supernatural power in the believer’s life. This may include changes in behavior, a greater boldness in sharing the Gospel, or the ability to walk in the Spirit in a way that is unmistakable to others. Additionally, speaking in tongues is presented as one of the key signs that a person has received the Holy Spirit. However, Prince acknowledges that many believers face resistance when it comes to speaking in tongues, often due to spiritual opposition. He warns that Satan will try to restrain you from speaking in tongues, a practice that can be a powerful tool for spiritual warfare and personal edification.

Finally, Derek Prince provides practical instruction on how to receive the Holy Spirit. He emphasizes that receiving the Spirit is available to all believers, not a select few, and it requires faith and openness to God’s work. Prince’s message encourages listeners to position themselves in humility and eager expectation, trusting that God will respond to their hunger for more of the Holy Spirit.

Application for Today’s Believers:

Derek Prince’s message is particularly relevant for modern Christians who may feel spiritually stagnant or unsure about their experience with the Holy Spirit. In a world that often dismisses or misunderstands the power of the Holy Spirit, it’s essential to return to the biblical understanding that the Holy Spirit is a gift meant to empower every believer. For those who have not yet experienced the fullness of the Spirit or are uncertain about speaking in tongues, Prince’s teachings offer clarity, encouragement, and biblical guidance for how to pursue this vital spiritual encounter.

The sermon also serves as a reminder that spiritual gifts are not only for the early church; they are meant to operate today. The Holy Spirit is still at work, and Christians are called to walk in the power of the Spirit, operating in gifts that will build the Church and expand God’s kingdom.

Prince’s teaching encourages believers to press forward in their faith, eager to receive everything God has for them, especially the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.

Renouncing Curses by Derek Prince

Derek Prince’s teaching on “Renouncing Curses” is one of the most eye-opening messages I’ve ever heard regarding the spiritual realm. His biblical insight reveals how many of us may be unknowingly living under the influence of generational or spoken curses—and how these can affect every area of our lives, from relationships to health and finances. Exploration of the Spiritual Realms

Pittman's narrative begins with his sudden medical emergency, leading to an out-of-body experience where he traverses various heavenly realms. He provides vivid descriptions of the second heaven, highlighting the existence of demonic entities and their influence. This segment aligns with biblical references to spiritual warfare and the existence of principalities and powers beyond our physical sight.

Insights into the Demonic Realm

Delving into the demonic realm, Pittman sheds light on the strategies employed by dark forces to infiltrate and influence human affairs. He emphasizes the importance of spiritual discernment and vigilance, urging believers to recognize and resist subtle forms of deception that can lead one astray.

A Wake-Up Call to the Church

One of the most compelling aspects of Pittman's experience is his message to the Church. He warns against complacency and the dangers of a superficial faith that lacks depth and genuine transformation. Drawing parallels to the biblical account of the Laodicean church, he calls for a revival of fervent faith and authentic Christian living. This aligns with his critique of a "placebo" Christianity—a faith that is more about outward appearances than true spiritual vitality.onethingministries.net
