God’s Design for Dependence, Not Independence - Chapter 3 part 2 - Chapter 3 of 7

In today’s culture, financial independence is celebrated as the ultimate goal. But from a biblical perspective, we must ask:
Does God want me to be financially independent? The answer may surprise you.

No—God Calls Us to Dependence, Not Independence

As followers of Christ, we are not called to live independently from God. We live under His authority, not as self-governing individuals, but as subjects of the King of Kings. Our lives are not our own—we were bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). True spiritual maturity does not seek autonomy, but a deeper reliance on God.

Yes, God blesses us with resources—money, homes, jobs, and possessions—but He calls us to trust Him, not those resources. Independence suggests we no longer need anyone. Yet Scripture teaches that whether rich or poor, we are to look to God to meet every need (Philippians 4:19).

The Trap of Self-Sufficiency

When we achieve financial comfort, we’re often tempted to shift our trust from God to our bank accounts. The Bible warns us against this:

“You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth.” (Deuteronomy 8:17–18)

Financial freedom is not the same as spiritual freedom. Getting out of debt is a good and godly goal—but not so we can become self-reliant. God’s perfect plan is for us to depend on Him daily, allowing Him to guide our finances and our future.

A Better Purpose for Prosperity

God’s design for your finances isn’t just for personal comfort. It’s so you can be a blessing to others. Read Matthew 25 and consider the parables of stewardship. God wants you to be “sufficient in all things” so that you can “abound in every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8).

Imagine a world where every believer lived by faith—where Christians weren’t reliant on government aid but were equipped to care for the widow, the orphan, the homeless, and the spiritually lost. That’s God’s vision: a body of believers strong in faith, generous in action, and rooted in dependence on Him.

Living in God's System, Not the World's

When you operate within God’s economic system—by faith, with generosity, and by His Word—you unlock supernatural provision. The more you grow in faith and biblical understanding, the more resistance you may face from the enemy. But with every battle comes a greater victory—and with each victory, God receives more glory.

Satan uses fear, doubt, and unbelief to derail your progress. Just as he deceived Eve by twisting God’s words, he tries to undermine your confidence in God’s promises. That’s why you must resist him, stand firm in the Word, and speak truth over your situation.

“(God) calls those things which do not exist as though they did.” (Romans 4:17)

A Daily Declaration of Faith

Pray this aloud regularly until your heart fully believes it:

“Father, in the name of Jesus, I am part of the Body of Christ. I overcome evil with good. Satan has no power over me, for greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. No evil will befall me, nor shall any plague come near my dwelling, for You have given Your angels charge over me. They keep me in all my ways. My path is one of life, peace, and provision. I thank You, Father, that no weapon formed against me shall prosper. I am like a tree planted by streams of water. My God supplies all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. I have sufficiency in all things and abound in every good work, for Your grace abounds toward me.” Amen.

True Wealth Is Measured in Faith and Generosity

Real wealth isn’t about how much you’ve accumulated on earth, but what you’ve deposited in heaven. It’s being debt-free, content, and positioned to give. It’s living by faith, not paycheck to paycheck. It’s owing no one anything but to love them (Romans 13:8).

Financial freedom with spiritual dependence—that is the sweet spot of Christian stewardship.
