God Doesn’t Want You “Financially Independent”—He Wants You Fully Dependent on Him - Chapter 3 of 7

Understanding God’s Perspective on Wealth and Dependence

The short answer to the question, “Does God want me to be financially independent?” is a resounding No.

In the kingdom of God, we are not called to live as autonomous beings. We are not spiritual freelancers. We are citizens under the rulership of King Jesus—our Lord, Savior, and High Priest. As servants of the King, we surrender every part of our lives, including our finances, to His authority.

God blesses us with resources, but He never intended for us to become independent of Him. The very definition of independent—“not needing help from anyone”—contradicts the life of faith. Whether rich or poor, God expects us to look to Him for our daily needs. That includes our income, provision, security, and future.

The danger of wealth is deception. Scripture warns the rich not to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God (1 Timothy 6:17). When we achieve financial “success,” it’s easy to start thinking, “Look at what I’ve accomplished.” Without realizing it, we can begin to worship our bank account, career, or status instead of the One who gave us breath.

God wants us to be debt-free—but not self-sufficient. He wants us to rely on Him. Our jobs and abilities are simply tools; God is the true Source. Without dependence on Him, we are prone to fall right back into the same debt and bondage we were rescued from.

God’s Perfect Plan: Dependence with Abundance

God’s perfect plan is that we trust Him in every area of life. When we do, He will make us sufficient in all things so that we can “abound to every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8). That’s true biblical prosperity—not hoarding for ourselves, but having enough to meet our needs and bless others.

If you remember nothing else from this chapter, remember this: Real wealth is found in full dependence on God. This is a mystery to the world but the foundation for victorious Christian living. Meditate on Matthew 25, and let God speak to your heart about stewardship, faith, and kingdom purpose.

Imagine what the Church would look like if every believer lived this way—fully trusting God. We wouldn’t be dependent on government programs. Instead, the Church would rise to care for widows, orphans, the homeless, and the hurting. We would be a city set on a hill, ministering hope to a sin-sick and broken world.

The Fight of Faith: How to Stand

When you begin to live by faith in every area—including finances—God will meet you at your level of trust. The more you grow, the more opposition you may face. But with each battle comes a greater victory, and with every victory comes more glory to God.

The enemy’s main weapons are fear, doubt, and unbelief. Just like in the Garden of Eden, Satan whispers lies: “God won’t really do that for you.” “You’re not worthy.” “What if He doesn’t come through?” You must silence these lies by speaking God’s truth.

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

Declare God’s Word over your life. Don’t speak the problem—speak the promises of God. Speak by faith. Call those things that be not as though they were (Romans 4:17).

Daily Prayer of Financial Dependence

Pray this daily, aloud, until your heart begins to truly believe:

“Father, in the name of Jesus, I am part of the Body of Christ. I overcome evil with good. Satan has no power over me, for greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. No evil shall befall me, and no plague shall come near my home, for Your angels guard me in all my ways. No weapon formed against me shall prosper. I am like a tree planted by rivers of water. My God supplies all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. I have sufficiency in all things and I abound in every good work. Thank You, Lord, for Your grace and provision.”

The True Measure of Wealth

Financial independence is not the goal. The true measure of wealth is eternal:

  • Treasure laid up in heaven.

  • A life free from debt.

  • The ability to give generously.

  • Peace, not pressure.

  • Trust in God—not money.

That is biblical financial victory. That is God’s will for you.
