Hebrews Bible Study — Chapter 2, Verses 5–9

Today's Lesson: "The Son Made Lower Than Angels"

I'm Well Done — Knowing Jesus, Finishing Well

Today's passage is a beautiful continuation of yesterday's lesson. Hebrews 2:5–9 reveals something extraordinary about Jesus Christ: The One who is superior to the angels willingly became lower than the angels so that He could suffer death for us.

There is a powerful connection between the creation of man, the authority God originally entrusted to humanity, and the ultimate fulfillment of God's purpose through Jesus Christ.

THE SON MADE LOWER THAN ANGELS

Hebrews Chapter 2, Verses 5–9

I'm Well Done — Knowing Jesus, Finishing Well

#1. Introduction — Why Did Jesus Become Lower Than Angels?

In our previous lesson, we learned the importance of paying careful attention to the salvation God has provided through His Son.

Today, we discover something even more remarkable.

Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, willingly humbled Himself, taking on human flesh, so that He could accomplish something no angel could ever accomplish.

#2. The World to Come — Hebrews 2:5

"For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak."

The word world here points to the coming inhabited world under Christ's reign.

God has not placed that future kingdom under the authority of angels.

It belongs to Jesus Christ.

The One who humbled Himself will reign as King over all creation.

#3. What Is Man? — Hebrews 2:6–8

"But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:

Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet."

The writer is quoting Psalm 8, verses 4 through 6.

The expression "in a certain place" is simply a way of introducing a familiar Scripture passage.

The question is remarkable: Why would the Creator of the universe be mindful of mankind?

God originally gave humanity authority over the works of His hands.

But because of sin, mankind does not presently exercise that dominion as God originally intended.

Hebrews tells us that we do not yet see all things placed under man's authority.

Yet God's purpose has not failed.

#4. But We See Jesus — Hebrews 2:9

"But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man."

Notice those wonderful words:

"But we see Jesus."

We may not yet see everything in this world under God's intended order, but we can see the One who has fulfilled the Father's plan.

Jesus became lower than the angels by taking on human nature.

He suffered death, rose again, and is now crowned with glory and honor.

To "taste death for every man" means that Jesus truly experienced death on behalf of humanity.

His sacrifice is sufficient for all, and salvation is received through faith in Him.

First Corinthians 15, verses 27 and 28, and Ephesians 1, verse 22, remind us that all things are being brought under Christ's authority.

#5. Personal Application — Where Are We Looking?

Here is the question I want us to consider today.

When we look at the world around us, do we see confusion, suffering, and uncertainty?

Or are we looking beyond those circumstances to Jesus Christ?

Hebrews says, "But we see Jesus."

That is where our faith must remain focused.

Finishing well is not about gaining authority, recognition, or glory for ourselves.

It is about knowing Jesus, abiding in Him, and faithfully following the One who gave Himself for us.

As John the Baptist declared, "He must increase, but I must decrease."

#6. Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son, who willingly humbled Himself and suffered death for our salvation.

Help us to keep our eyes on Jesus rather than the uncertainties of this world.

Teach us to walk humbly, live faithfully, and finish well for Your glory.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
