1 Peter Chapter 4: Living for God's Will in the Last Days

Living for Eternity, Not the Flesh

Peter reminds believers that following Christ changes not only our eternal destination but also the purpose of our daily lives. Because Jesus suffered for us, we are called to live differently from the world around us.

"He no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God." (1 Peter 4:2)

Before coming to Christ, many of us lived according to our own desires. Peter lists the sins that once characterized unbelieving lives—drunkenness, lust, revelry, and idolatry. But those who belong to Christ have been called out of that former way of life.

The world may not understand our changed priorities. In fact, Peter says they may even speak evil of believers because we no longer join them in their sinful pursuits. Yet our responsibility is not to seek people's approval but to faithfully obey God.

The End of All Things Is at Hand

Peter's words are just as relevant today as when he wrote them nearly two thousand years ago.

"The end of all things is at hand..." (1 Peter 4:7)

Rather than producing fear, this truth should produce faithful living.

Peter gives several practical instructions for every believer:

• Be serious and watchful in prayer.
• Love one another fervently.
• Be quick to forgive because love covers a multitude of sins.
• Show hospitality without complaining.
• Use your spiritual gifts to serve others faithfully.
• Glorify God in everything you do.

These are not suggestions for a select few—they are marks of every believer who desires to honor Christ until He returns.

Faithful Stewards of God's Grace

One of the most encouraging verses in this chapter is Peter's reminder that every Christian has received a gift from God.

"As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God." (1 Peter 4:10)

God has entrusted each believer with opportunities, abilities, and spiritual gifts to serve His people and advance His Kingdom.

We are not owners—we are stewards.

• One day, each of us will give an account for how faithfully we used what the Lord entrusted to us.
• This immediately reminds us of Jesus' parable of the talents and His wonderful words:
• "Well done, good and faithful servant..." (Matthew 25:21)
• Faithfulness—not fame—is what God rewards.
• Rejoice When You Suffer for Christ

Peter offers one of the Bible's most surprising commands:

• "Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you..." (1 Peter 4:12)
• Suffering for Christ should never surprise the believer.
• Trials refine our faith, strengthen our dependence upon God, and prepare us for future glory.
• Peter even tells believers to rejoice because sharing in Christ's sufferings means we will also rejoice exceedingly when His glory is revealed.
• The world often measures success by comfort, popularity, or wealth.
• God measures success by faithfulness.
• Commit Your Soul to the Faithful Creator

Peter concludes the chapter with a powerful encouragement:

"Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator." (1 Peter 4:19)

What a comforting reminder!

The God who created us is faithful to sustain us. No trial is wasted. No act of obedience is forgotten. Every sacrifice made for Christ will one day be rewarded.

As believers awaiting the return of Jesus, we are called to persevere with joyful confidence, knowing our labor in the Lord is never in vain.

• 1 Peter 4 challenges every believer to ask:
• Am I living for God's will or my own?
• Am I using my spiritual gifts to serve others?
• Am I praying with eternity in view?
• Am I willing to suffer faithfully for Christ?
