The Seductive Power of Spiritual Corruption
John is shown a vision of a woman — beautifully dressed in purple and scarlet, covered in gold and jewels — riding a scarlet beast with seven heads and ten horns. At first glance, she appears powerful, prosperous, and admired. But her beauty hides deep corruption.
She represents a false religious system, one that entices the nations away from God. Her cup, though golden, is full of abominations. The world drinks from her lies, becoming drunk with spiritual deception.
Just as the serpent in Eden mixed truth with lies, this “Babylon” uses glamour and influence to make evil seem good and compromise seem harmless.
The Woman and the Beast
The woman rides a beast — symbolic of political and worldly power. She doesn’t just represent false religion, but a partnership between religion and politics, where power and greed replace truth and righteousness.
For a season, the world will unite under this unholy alliance, pretending to offer peace and unity. But behind the scenes lies rebellion against God.
This is a warning for today’s believers: beware of systems that sound spiritual but deny the authority of Christ. The modern world constantly calls for “unity” that ignores holiness and “tolerance” that accepts sin. Revelation 17 shows where that road leads — to destruction.
The Name on Her Forehead
On her forehead is written:
“MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”
This is not ancient Babylon reborn, but a spiritual Babylon — a symbol of the entire world’s rebellion against God.
She is the “mother” of all false religions and systems that put self, money, and power above God.
Her cup is filled with the blood of saints — showing that throughout history, the faithful have suffered under corrupt religious and political powers.
The Beast Turns on the Woman
Ironically, the beast that carried her will destroy her. Evil always turns on itself. The same nations that supported her will hate her and burn her with fire.
Why? Because God is sovereign — even over evil. Revelation 17:17 says,
“For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish His purpose.”
What a reminder that no matter how powerful the world’s systems seem, God is still in control. He allows evil to destroy itself, paving the way for Christ’s victory.
The Lesson for Believers Today
We are living in days where Babylon’s spirit — pride, luxury, lust, and compromise — is everywhere.
The call of Revelation 17 (and 18) is simple: “Come out of her, My people.”
Don’t be seduced by the world’s values or promises.
Don’t ride with the beast.
Don’t drink from her cup.
The beauty of Babylon will fade, but the purity of Christ’s Bride — the true Church — will shine forever.
