John 19 – Jesus Crucified: The King of the Jews, Burial, and Fulfillment of Scripture
✍️ John 19 reveals the suffering, crucifixion, death, and burial of Jesus Christ. Pilate delivers Him to be crucified, the soldiers mock Him, and the inscription “King of the Jews” is placed above His cross. Scripture is fulfilled as Jesus dies, declaring, “It is finished.” Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus lay His body in a new tomb, preparing for the resurrection to come.
📜 Summary of John 19
In John 19, Jesus is scourged, mocked with a crown of thorns, and unjustly sentenced to death by Pilate, even though Pilate finds no guilt in Him. The crowd cries for His crucifixion, insisting that He claimed to be the Son of God. Pilate gives in to their demands, and Jesus carries His cross to Golgotha, where He is crucified between two others.
Above Him, Pilate writes the charge: “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Even as He suffers, Jesus shows compassion—entrusting His mother Mary to the care of His disciple John. As He dies, Jesus fulfills Scripture: soldiers cast lots for His garment, He thirsts, and He declares, “It is finished.” His side is pierced, and blood and water flow, signifying His completed work of salvation. Finally, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus courageously bury Him in a nearby tomb.
John 19 takes us to the cross—where Jesus declared “It is finished” and completed His mission of salvation. 🙏
