The Buy-Sell Network — But What Are We Really Buying?
Every day we buy and sell things.
We buy products, services, ideas, entertainment, convenience, and comfort. We sell our time, our skills, our labor, and sometimes even our peace of mind just trying to “get ahead” in life.
That’s the world we live in.
And yet, this morning I was reminded of something Jesus said in the Book of Revelation that stopped me in my tracks.
To the church of Laodicea, Jesus said:
“Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed… and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.”
— Revelation 3:17–18 (NKJV)
What powerful words.
Jesus was speaking to people who thought they were successful because they had wealth, comfort, and material prosperity. But spiritually, they were bankrupt.
Isn’t that still true today?
We live in a culture obsessed with buying and selling. Bigger houses. Better cars. More followers. More money. More success. More possessions. Yet many people are still empty inside.
Jesus was not condemning wealth itself. He was exposing misplaced trust.
The people of Laodicea believed they “needed nothing,” but they had neglected the things that mattered most:
- Truth
- Righteousness
- Humility
- Spiritual vision
- A genuine relationship with God
Jesus told them to “buy” something far more valuable than earthly riches:
- Gold refined in the fire — genuine faith tested and purified
- White garments — righteousness and purity before God
- Eye salve — spiritual understanding and discernment
The interesting thing is that these things cannot be purchased with money.
They are received through repentance, faith, humility, obedience, and surrender to Christ.
As I reflected on the name “The Buy-Sell Network,” I realized there’s a deeper message hidden within it.
We are all participating in a marketplace every day — not just financially, but spiritually.
The real question is:
What are we investing our lives in?
Jesus lovingly warns us not to become spiritually comfortable while chasing temporary things that cannot satisfy the soul.
Verse 19 says:
“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.”
That is not a message of condemnation.
It is a message of love.
Jesus corrects those He loves because He desires something better for us than empty success and temporary riches.
In a world consumed with buying and selling, may we never forget the things that truly matter:
- Faith
- Integrity
- Compassion
- Wisdom
- Generosity
- Truth
- Eternal life through Jesus Christ
The greatest investment we can ever make is not in earthly treasures, but in the Kingdom of God.
Because one day, all earthly markets will close.
But eternity will remain.
“Buy the truth, and do not sell it.”
— Proverbs 23:23

One of the things that has been on my heart lately is how easy it is for all of us — individuals and business owners alike — to become consumed with the pressures of buying, selling, earning, building, and simply trying to stay ahead.
ReplyDeleteThere’s nothing wrong with business, work, or success. But Jesus reminds us that there is a difference between worldly wealth and true riches.
Real wealth includes wisdom, peace, integrity, faith, discernment, and a right relationship with God.
That’s something money alone can never buy.
Would enjoy hearing your thoughts on this.
