Why Me Lord? (What have I done to deserve this?) - How To Win The War On Debt - Chapter 2 - Taken from the Revised Workbook Version Dated May 14, 2014

Why Me Lord? (What have I done to deserve this?) - Chapter 2

Financial Hardship seems to be the "norm" for the "Average American" today. As of this writing, Tennessee is the number one in the nation for bankruptcies. One out of every five Tennesseans are filing for bankruptcy. That is pretty alarming is it not?

Note: As 2022 Alabama is the the State with the largest amount of bankruptcies.

Is bankruptcy the only solution to our problems or is it just an easy way out? Bankruptcy is a quick fix for the immediate problem but it is only a treatment for the symptom. There is possibly a root cause that brought you into your present financial straights. Our objective is not a quick fix but to show you ways in which you can fix the root cause and work your way out from under your present situation gradually and patiently. You probably did not get into trouble overnight and you will not get out overnight.

If you are thinking of bankruptcy yourself then please consider the consequences. In a chapter 7 bankruptcy, which is a total wipeout of debts except for any taxes that you may owe, your credit report will show this negative blot against you for 10 to 14 years. It may be very hard for you to finance an automobile if you have to buy another one during that period of time. You may even have trouble opening a checking account at some banks, buying life insurance, or changing jobs. You may be treated like a second-class citizen, as I was.

Even a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, which is a repayment schedule over a brief period of time, will show up on your credit report for seven years. Negative information on your credit report will affect you're renting a new apartment or house because the apartment manager or landlord will always run a credit report on you. You may not be able to finance furniture or anything else on time unless you have cash. CASH! What is that stuff? I've known people that had most all of their debts wiped out with Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and still did not believe that they had enough money left over after paying bills to save anything. Save first and then live off the rest.

You should order a copy of our credit report(s) every year. Credit reporting agencies do make mistakes. You have the right to request an investigation of any adverse information shown on your report. If you've been denied credit within the last thirty days you can get a copy of your credit report for free. You can get a copy of your credit report from the three major reporting agencies for a nominal fee.

Before filing for bankruptcy you may want to consider making an appointment with the Consumer Credit Counseling Services or Cambridge Credit Services. Do a search online and look for a nationwide, non-profit organization that can help you avoid bankruptcy, lower your repayment schedule and lower the interest that you are having to pay.

So what happened? What is the root cause of the "Average American" being so deep in debt? Mom and Dad both work, they both have good jobs, 2.5 kids, a dog, a nice house with a two-car garage, they go to church, and they try to save a little money here and there.

They didn't plan to fail - they just failed to plan. Insurance statistics tell us that less than 3% of Americans are financially well off enough that they can retire at age 65. Most Americans will retire in poverty. Eighty-seven percent of Americans 65 and older are living on a meager income of less than $10,000 per year. Life slips by and before we know it we are approaching retirement age and we have not saved for that day. What are we to do? Develop a plan. Start today!

My mother always taught me that "It is not how much money you make that is important, it is how much you keep". That is so true. Financial difficulties are not just for the middle to lower-income brackets. There are people earning everything from $10,000 to $200,000 per year that are just barely getting by.

So now that we know that we are in a financial mess, how do we get out of it? Well, there is only one way to build a house. Before you do anything you must draw up a set of plans. It is the same with controlling your finances so that you can get out of debt. Are we wanting to get out of debt so we can go out and do it all over again? Heaven forbid! You do not build a house or a large skyscraper overnight. It takes time. Some of us may look at our mountain of debt and feel like it is impossible to overcome but Jesus said, " . . . If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth'(Mark 9:23), and ' . . . Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses; But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses." (Mark 11:23-26)

If our blueprint for financial freedom includes faith in God, He will rebuke the devourer and make a way for us to overcome any mountain. Our plan should be written down and specific as to how we are going to accomplish this task. Once you've developed your plan stick to it. Write out some ideas that you could do to put your blueprint for financial freedom into action.

12-Step Plan For Financial Freedom

1. You are not your own, you are bought with a price. Allocate a minimum of 10% of your time each day for prayer and study of God's word. Get to know him. Write down your prayer requests and date them. Give him praise when he answers your prayers. Pray in the Spirit.

2. Have faith in God that his words are true - hold fast to the word and refuse to fear no matter how bad things may appear to be. Do not be moved by what you see. The world says I'll believe it when I see it. The faith-filled believer believes that God is able to do what he has promised long before his eyes see the result. When you plant a seed you know that it will come up and produce 30 to 100 times itself. It does not happen overnight but you know that it will do what it was designed, by God to do. When we plant seeds of faith they too will produce a harvest 30, 60, or 100 times when we wait patiently and let the seed grow to maturity. Take a stand, refuse to fear and God will deliver you.

3. Plan Your Giving. You may not think that you will be able to pay a tenth of your gross income in the beginning. You may feel that you can only pay a tenth of the bring home. You may be so deep in debt that feels you cannot pay either. That's between you and God but I recommend that you pay your full tithe and let God help you with the rest. God expects us to tithe because He only asks for a 10% return on the money that he has given us and he opens the windows of Heaven when we do give.  We are managers, not owners of the 90%. If we do not give we are stealing from God. When you know a thief is around you lock your doors and windows don't you. God closes His windows of blessings when we do not tithe We hinder our own financial blessings by not giving.

4. Pay yourself next. Deposit a set amount in an account designated as an emergency fund. I recommend that you save up to a minimum of $1,000. We must plan for those unexpected emergencies. When we are not prepared for them, we will find ourselves going deeper and deeper in debt. Once you've built up your $1,000 take the money you were putting into the savings account each month and apply it to your smallest debt until you pay it off. Start out saving what you can - $2, $5, $10, $50 - just get started.

5. Use the debt snowball method to work your way out of debt. Once you have saved the $1,000, apply that money you were saving to the smallest debt until it is paid off. Then take the amount of money that you were paying on that debt and apply it to the next smallest one and so on until you are out of debt.

6. Once you have done this then start saving again until you have built up your Emergency Fund to around three to six months of your living expenses.

7. Start a savings program for other purchases, i.e., a car, a house, furniture, or whatever needs that you may anticipate.

8. Take on a second job. The right part-time job can easily bring in an income that can make a major difference in eliminating debt.

9. Adjust your priorities. If you are like most people you spend money on things that you do not really need. Or, you do not really manage the money you do have; you just spend as expenses come up. Do not feel bad about this. We have all done it. It takes a little more time to develop a management attitude about your spending habits, but it's essential that you "get control" of your spending. Set up a budget. Put a dollar limit on what you will spend for each item. We will have a complete lesson on that later. Adjust your lifestyle. Along with controlling your money comes the matter of priorities. And along with setting priorities comes one tough rule of life: you can not have everything. If you want to achieve financial freedom, you may have to make sacrifices for a period of time.

10. A part of the budgeting process is distinguishing between what you need and what you want. For example, you might need a second car, but you might want a Cadillac. Too often purchases, even major ones, are made on the basis of want. If you're really ready to get serious about your financial future, you may have to postpone some of your desires and wants. It's a kind of trade-off - do without something now so that you can have more later. If you usually stay a week on out-of-town vacation trips, trim the time away to three days and plan enjoyable family activities at home for the balance of the time.

11. Give! Not only does God expect us to tithe but he expects us to be generous with others. We do not have to give just money. We can give of our time, talents, and abilities. This is a way that God provided for us to build treasures (riches) in heaven. (Matthew 6:19-21) "Give and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down and shaken together, and running over shall men give unto your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. I have discovered the true secret to wealth, success, and happiness. God's will for us is to be prosperous and in good health (3 John 2). If we are beaten down, broke, and in poor health are we in God's will? No, I don't think so. The enemy wants you there so that you will not be an effective witness nor will you be able to give to those in need. Does God get any glory when his children are buried in debt and just barely get by? No! God gets the glory when his children have overcome the love of money and give above and beyond the tithe. This is when God pours out his blessing on His children. God's perfect will for you is to have a surplus so that you may give away your money (expecting nothing in return). When we do this God multiplies it back to us some 30, 60, or 100 times what we have given so that we can do it again and again. Can you see the "Big Picture"? When we, the church, finally get hold of this we will virtually eliminate all debt in a short period of time. Start today! Even if you are in debt. Give something to someone else that is less fortunate than you and you will see miracles start happening in your life. Be diligent, persistent, and patient and you will see God move.

12. Re-align your assets.

1. Get a check-up on your auto insurance, life insurance, health insurance, homeowner's insurance, and renter's insurance. Financial Aid For College

2. Savings and investment strategies

3. Reduce personal expenses, i.e., groceries, eating out, utilities, telephone bills, clothing, etc.

Our Next Lesson is Chapter 3 "Does God Want Me To Be Financially Independent?"

How To Win The War On Debt - Chapter 3 - Does God Want Us To Be "Financially Independent" - With Revisions from the Last Revision Dated May 14, 2012

Does God Want Us To Be "Financially Independent"

The answer to that question is NO

Note: As Christians, we are not a democratic society. We are under the rulership of Jesus or King, our Lord and Savior, and our High Priest.  We are servants of our King as He has all authority over us.  We surrender our lives to Him as He is in control of our destiny.

God does bless us with money and material possessions, but He needs us to be dependent upon Him. The word independent means not needing anything from anyone. God needs us to be dependent upon Him for everything in life. Rich or poor He expects you to look to Him to meet your daily need. The Bible warns the rich because it is so easy for them to look to themselves and say, "Look at me, Look at what I've accomplished, I do not have need of anyone. We have made ourselves our own god.

God wants us to be out of debt and dependent upon Him for the things we need in this life - not our jobs - not our abilities. As we achieve financial independence we will be tempted to go right back into slavery to debt again. We are tempted to worship things and not the creator of all things. That is not God's perfect plan for you. God's perfect plan for you is that you trust in Him in every area of your life, to be sufficient in all things so that you will be ready and able to minister to others who are in need. If you get nothing else out of this book learn this one thing. This is a hidden mystery to the world. Read all of Matthew 25 and meditate on this Chapter. Let God speak to your heart.

Suppose that every believer lived by faith the way God intended, what would the world be like. We would not be depending upon our Government for security. The believers in the churches would be ministering to the widows and orphans, to the homeless. They would be ministering to the sin sick and dying world. The believer would have more than enough to give to those in need.

When you begin to operate in God's system and live by faith in every area of your life, God will step in and make up for what you do not know. He will put you over! The deeper you get into the Word and the more you learn, the more you will expand, the more you expand, the more Satan will fight; the more he fights, the bigger the victory, the bigger the victory, the more glory to God, the more glory to God the more you will expand.

Satan's only weapons are fear, doubt, and unbelief. When we stand on what God tells us in His word Satan comes along and whispers in our mind's ear words of doubt and unbelief just like he did to Eve in the Garden of Eden. Satan twists things around and plants negative statements like; "God does not really mean he'll do that for me", "I am not worthy because I am so weak", or "what if he does not do it for me".

We have to take a stand - refuse to listen to those thoughts (resist the devil and he will flee from you) - speak what the word says - do not speak the problem - speak the answer to the problem according to the word and in the first person - speak of things that are not as though they were (Romans 4:17). Pray the following prayer every day aloud and several times a day until your unconscious mind starts to respond and accept that you are seriously trusting God:

"Father, in the name of Jesus, I am in the Body of Christ. I overcome evil with good. Satan has no power over me for greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world. No evil will befall me; neither shall any plague come nigh my dwelling for he has given his angels charge over me. They keep me in all my ways and in my pathway in life. I thank you, Father, which no weapon formed against me will prosper. I am like a tree planted by the river of water. My God supplies all my needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. I have sufficiency in all things. I do abound to do all good works for my God has made all grace abound toward me." Amen

A measure of real wealth is not financial independence. The measure of real wealth is the amount of treasure that you've accumulated in heaven. Real wealth is to be totally out of debt while you're on this earth and owe no man anything but love him. Real wealth is having sufficiency in all things so that you can give to others.

How To Win The War on Debt ~ Chapter 1~ The Money Game

How To Win The War On Debt - Chapter 1 - The Money Game - How to Play the Game, and Win.

When my wife and I moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1995, I listened to a popular radio show called "The Money Game", which aired on Nashville's WWTN 96.7 FM.

The title "The Money Game" reminds me of the game known as Monopoly.

The cover of the cassette "The Money Game", which was recorded from a radio program, has a picture of a corner of a board which looks very much like a monopoly board.

It reminds me that I have often thought that life is like a monopoly game, a game of chance.

Every morning you get up and face the world, however, someone else seems to be throwing the dice for you, and you are an inanimate object that gets pushed around the board, and you only wish that you could get to make it back to go so you can collect $200.

Of course, we also hope to buy property along the way, but we have to worry about landing on someone else's property, railroad, or utility.

And I have to pay for the privilege of stopping there.

And I may have to go to jail for three turns.

Life is not exactly like that game, but we do feel pushed around by life, and we do feel that we have to play a game with a set of unwritten rules in order to survive.

The rules seem to be made-up as we go.

We often find ourselves with very little property (net worth) and very little in our bank account.

We sometimes land on a block that requires us to draw a card, which in turn sets us back even further because we have to pay $50 to each player for some ridiculous reason.

However, as ridiculous as this seems we sometimes have unexpected emergencies whereas we have to dole out what is left of our hard earned money to some hospital, or doctor, or auto repair shop.

Sometimes it seems that everything is working against our keeping our heads above water (debt).

We may have to mortgage Oriental Avenue just to pay for landing on Park Place with Hotels on it.

Obviously Oriental Avenue will not be enough.

We'll also have to sell all of our houses, hotels, if any, plus mortgage all three properties.

But what if that still is not enough?

Well, there is only one other recourse.

Mortgage all other properties.

If that still is not enough then we're finished.

Game is over for us.

We're bankrupt.

Even if we did pay off all of our debts the odds are against us because all of the other players have monopoly's with houses and hotels, and one guy has all four railroads.

And, even if we do make it to go again and collect another $200 how far do you think you can go before you land on somebody's hotel again.

I'm sure that you've played this game before and have been in this bad situation.

Perhaps real life has you boxed in and you feel as desperate as the above mentioned monopoly player.

How did we get in this shape?

Was it chance?

Was it fate?

Is God rolling the dice to see where you will land next?

Is it Satan, is He trying everything possible to destroy you by bringing these hardships upon you?

Or, is it possible that the hand, a gambling term, that life has dealt you, was created by you and mistakes that you made?

Is God punishing you?

We LIVE in a worldly society that preaches to us through every kind of media, especially commercial television, which we must seek financial independence, we must be successful, we must have a big house, we must have a mercedes, we must have the best clothes, we must be motivated to exceed everyone else that we work with.

We have professional speakers that teach us how to get ahead in life, how to "Think and Grow Rich", for example.

Are we being brainwashed into a state of unsatisfaction with our present station in life or are we being trained how to motivate ourselves to become all that God intended for us to be?

Before we can play any game we must first know what the object of the game is, or what is required to win, and what the rules are the (do's and don'ts).

Satan would have us believe that there are not any rules and that we must do whatever it takes to get ahead, to have more things, to forget about others needs, and just think about ourselves.

The word teaches us that "the righteous livve by faith, that is, trusting God to meet our daily needs. The word teaches us to not be moved or shaken from the faith because of how bad things look.

The word teaches us two of the Greatest Commandments: Can you recite them? Read Matthew 22:37-39?

The world teaches us to love money and to want more of it if we are to show the world that we are successful.

The word teaches us that the love of money is the root of all evil. Money is not evil but the love or obsession with it is.

The world teaches us we deserve better than what God can provide in this life.

The word teaches us to be content with such things as God has given us.

The world teaches us to seek financial independence. Being wealthy is not a sin.

Many of the saints of the Bible were very wealthy.

But, the world teaches us to be independent of God.

It teaches us to seek money, money, money so that we can be self sufficient and to think we do not need God anymore.

The world teaches us, "We are a god!"

The word teaches us that we own nothing of our own.

Everything belongs to God.

God gives us the necessities of life; food, shelter, and clothing as he promised in His word.

He meets all of our needs.

The other things available in life are wants.

He promises to give us the desires of our hearts but he expects that our desires line up with His desires.

If our desires are selfish, sensual, and worldly then our own desires hinder blessings from God.

It's like what Zig Ziglar calls "Stinking Thinking".

"We need a check-up from the neck up."

What is our relationship to money in God's viewpoint?

We are stewards on this earth.

We are caretakers or managers of what God has given us to operate with in this earth.

Our jobs, the income that we bring home is not ours.

Its God's. God expects us to manage his possessions well and to return to Him a percent of the increase, which is a minimum of only 10%.

How do give back to God?

We give to God when we bless others through our charitable giving toward the needs of others.

James 1:27 Amplified Version says,

"Pure and unblemished religion, as it is expressed in outward acts in the sight of our God and Father is this:

to visit and look after the fatherless and the widows in their distress, and to keep oneself uncontaminated by the ,secular, world.

Worship God with the giving of the first fruits of your labors and live off of the rest.

God provides the seed for the sower.

We'll discuss the "Laws of Sowing and Reaping" later.

Even our bodies are not our own.

"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which you have of God, and ye are not your own?

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

I Corinthians 6:19-20.

The world tells us that if we are going to be successful we must show everyone how successful that we are by having just the right job, the right house, and the right car.

The word tells us that you can tell those that are God's by the fruits that they bear.

Does this mean the material things that they have acquired?

No, it means that your very life reveals where your values are, it reveals whether you do love God with all of you heart, might and soul.

It reveals whether you do love others as you love yourself.

You will see the fruits when you see that person spending his or her life giving of themselves to helping others instead of spending every waking moment only thinking of themselves and what they want.

The world says to get all the riches that you can get - buy all of the property that you can, put as many houses and hotels on the board of life as you can so that you can collect money from every poor, less fortunate nobody that comes your way.

There is nothing wrong with owning property or charging rent but when you are obsessed with getting more at the expense of others then you are doomed to a life of misery.

The word says to "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness and all of these other things shall be added unto you."

The word also tells us to store our treasure in heaven, not in this earth. Is it wrong to have wealth?

No, but we are not to put any importance on that wealth because it is not ours and it will be taken away from us.

We are to build our true treasures in heaven, not on this earth. (Matthew 6:19-21, and 33).

The humanistic philosophy says that we are our own God and that we shape our own destiny independent of God.

The theory is that with money we can solve all the worlds' problems.

Our own governmental leaders think that they can solve the world's problems by writing more laws. They do not even have a clue that the change must come from within each individual.

More laws and more money is not the cure for what ails the world.

The humanistic society wants to get rid of the church as we know it.

They just do not realize that the church is the only thing that is holding everything together.

If the church is taken out of here this world will be a very horrible place to live.

The word says for us to KEEP OUT OF DEBT. "...and owe no man anything, except to love one another." Romans 13:8 (Amplified Bible).

"Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender" Proverbs 22:7.

"Evil men borrow and "cannot pay it back' ! But the good man returns what he owes with some extra besides" Psalms 37:21.

"Do not withhold repayment of your debts. Do not say some other time, ' if you can pay now" Proverbs 3:27, and 28.

"The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets" Proverbs 21:20.

"Develop your business first before building your house" Proverbs 24:27.

"Steady plodding brings prosperity; hasty speculation brings poverty" Proverbs 21:5.

"It is more blessed to give than to receive" Acts 20:35.

"Instruct them . . . to be generous and ready to share . . . so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed" 1 Timothy 6:18, and19.

"He who loves money shall never have enough.

The foolish of thinking that wealth brings happiness!

The more you have, the more you spend, right up to the limits of your income." Ecclesiastes 5:10, and 11.

"No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other, or else he will hold to one, and despise the other.

You cannot serve God and riches" Luke 16:13.

"Judging a man by his wealth shows that you are guided by the wrong motives" James 2:4.

Webster's definition of success - the degree or measure of attaining a desired end.

And according to Scripture, the desired end for us is to become faithful stewards.

"Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to get along happily whether I have much or little.

I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything.

I have learned the secret of contentment in every situation, whether it be a full stomach or hunger, plenty or want". Philippians 4:11,and 12.

The foundation of our contentment is knowing the part that the living God plays in our finances.

He has promised to provide our needs.

"All mankind scratches for its daily bread, but your Heavenly Father knows your needs.

He will always give you all you need from day to day." Luke 12:30, and 31.

Our basic needs are the necessities of life - food, shelter, clothing.

A want is anything more than a need.

A steak dinner, a new car, and the latest fashions - they are all wants.

" and if we have food and covering, with these we shall be content" 1 Timothy 6:8.

"The earth belongs to God! Everything in all the world is His! He is the one who pushed the oceans back to let dry land appear." Psalms 24:1.

"Everything in the heavens and earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom." 1 Chronicles 29:11.

To be content, you must recognize that God is the owner of all your possessions.

If you believe you own even a single possession, then the circumstances that affect that possession will be reflected in your attitude.

If something favorable happens to the possession, then you will be happy:

but if something bad occurs, you will be discontent.

The issue in scripture is how to handle faithfully all God has entrusted us.

The faithful steward is responsible for what he has, whether he has much or little.

He can be wasteful and negligent whether he is poor or wealthy.

The word steward can be translated into three different words: manager, supervisor, and overseer.

The Scripture position of a steward is one of great responsibility.

He is the supreme authority under his master and has full responsibility for all his master's possessions and household affairs, even the raising of children.

As we examine Scripture we see that God, as Master, has given us the authority to be stewards.

"You God have put him, man, in charge of everything you made;

everything is put under his authority" Psalms 8:6.

Our only responsibility is to be faithful.

"moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful" 1 Corinthians 4:2.

As Christians we have been taught much about giving, but little about how to faithfully handle our money.

However, God is not only concerned with the amount we give, but also with what we do with our entire income.

In fact, he is interested in all that we have.

By giving a small percentage, many Christians feel that they can bypass all other responsibilities and do as much as they please with the remainder of their money.

The worldly Society says: you will find happiness and peace as you accumulate enough wealth to support your desired standard of living.

The Scripture teaches: you can be content in every circumstance as you follow the scriptural principles of how to handle your money and possessions.

"My Brethren, count it all for joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience." James 1:2, and 3.

"Rejoice evermore.

Pray without ceasing.

In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

AMEN.

Gaither Vocal Band - I Know Who Holds Tomorrow (Official Video)

I Know Who Holds Tomorrow Lyrics

I don't know about tomorrow; I just live from day to day. I don't borrow from it's sunshine For it's skies may turn to grey.

I don't worry o'er the future, For I know what Jesus said. And today I'll walk beside Him, For He knows what is ahead.

Many things about tomorrow I don't seem to understand But I know who holds tomorrow And I know who holds my hand.

Every step is getting brighter As the golden stairs I climb; Every burden's getting lighter, Every cloud is silver-lined.

There the sun is always shining, There no tear will dim the eye; At the ending of the rainbow Where the mountains touch the sky.

Many things about tomorrow I don't seem to understand But I know who holds tomorrow And I know who holds my hand.

I don't know about tomorrow; It may bring me poverty. But the one who feeds the sparrow, Is the one who stands by me.

And the path that is my portion May be through the flame or flood; But His presence goes before me And I'm covered with His blood.

Many things about tomorrow I don't seem to understand But I know who holds tomorrow And I know who holds my hand...
